Survey: Rents and Home Values Higher -- Associated Press
Survey: Rents and Home Values Higher: "Rent payments and home values have increased over the past five years and a greater percentage of the population has graduated from high school, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. Commuting time to jobs hasn't changed much, and neither has the number of rooms in those homes.
Those facts were among the highlights of the bureau's American Community Survey for 2004, which looked at key demographic, economic, housing and social data for the country and how they have changed since 2000."

Salvage Heaven / Predemolition sales offer help-yourself, home-hardware bargains: "It is 9 a.m., an hour before opening, and already a small crowd of shoppers has assembled. They peer through windows, scoping out the products and eyeing each other with appraising glances. Like so many deep-discount, for-a-limited-time-only sales, this event has attracted hard-core bargain hunters, with checkbooks in hand and prepared to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
But despite the anticipatory anxiety wafting through the morning air, this is no orgy of shameless consumerism but a recycling extravaganza disguised as retail madness. Because everything that gets bought here is one less thing headed for the landfill."
